Thousands Flee Northern California Wildfires

More under evacuation orders in wine country.

A wildfire raging in the foothills of the Cascade range in Northern California has claimed three lives, and a separate blaze has prompted mass evacuations and spread turmoil to the famed wine-producing regions of Napa and Sonoma Counties.

The three fatalities occurred in the Zogg Fire in Shasta County near Redding, about 200 miles north of San Francisco. They were all civilians. Their deaths bring to 29 the number of persons killed since mid-August in California wildfires.

The Zogg fire and the Glass Fire have spread across 36,000 acres, incinerating more than 100 homes and other buildings, and forcing thousands of residents to flee. Neither fire has any containment, according to CalFire. And in each case, the cause is under investigation.

The Glass Fire struck midway through the region’s traditional grape harvesting season. Some growers are saying they will forgo a 2020 vintage altogether because smoke has contaminated the ripening grapes waiting to be picked.

Much of northern California remains under red-flag warnings for extreme fire risks, as windy, hot, dry weather continues.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the men and women fighting the wildfires in the Pacific Northwest.
  • That people would heed evacuation orders when they are issued.
  • That God would provide a break in the weather to help calm the wildfires.
